1,500 fake social media accounts spreading fake news to be deleted: Salleh Keruak

BERA, 9 July : The Communications and Multimedia Ministry will seek the removal of almost 1,500 fake online social media accounts used to launch political attacks and spread fake news.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak said the accounts were set up on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram between January and June, for various negative activities.

He said that immediate action will be taken to remove the accounts with the cooperation of the three social networking service companies.

“From January until June, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) received public complaints of nearly 1,500 fake accounts on social media that were used for various negative activities, like spreading fake news and misinformation.

“Aside from the removal, further investigation is being done for enforcement purposes, like prosecution,” he said after attending an Umno Bera division meeting here today.

Also present were Umno Bera Division chief Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister.
