PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the move to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) would not threaten the importance of Bahasa Malaysia as the national language.
In an interview with Astro Awani on Thursday (July 12), the PKR adviser said Chinese education figures agree that Bahasa Malaysia will not be sidelined.
“We cannot neglect the position of Bahasa Melayu in the education system and the mastery of it in any system.
“In my conversations with Chinese education figures, they assured that this was not a problem for them,” Anwar said.
Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik had said on Thursday (July 12) that Pakatan Harapan would stick to its manifesto and recognise UEC as a legitimate entry requirement for tertiary education.
“We are going to make sure whatever policy that we have to make or whatever decision we are making, there will be no U-turn or any flip-flop, and it has to be holistic,” he said.
Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching previously said UEC would be recognised by year-end.
