KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 (Bernama) — Barisan Nasional (BN) is still waiting for the confirmation from the Election Commission on the status of Permatang Pauh Parliamentary seat in Penang and the Chempaka state seat in Kelantan before taking any further action.
“We will wait for the confirmation from EC about the dates for the by-elections,” Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak told reporters after chairing a BN Supreme Council meeting here tonight.
He said BN would study in detail the developments in the two constituencies and would not be hasty in making its decision.
“We will look at all aspects, taking into consideration our performance in Pengkalan Kubur when we won with an increased majority and our victory in Teluk Intan,” he said.
The by-election for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat is expected following incumbent Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s conviction for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan by the Federal Court.
The verdict automatically disqualified Anwar, 67, as Permatang Pauh MP.
Meanwhile, the Chempaka state seat fell vacant with the death of Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat of prostate cancer yesterday.
