PETALING JAYA,. The use of a publicly-funded building as a local election centre by MCA in Ayer Hitam is morally wrong, says Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong.
Liew, who is also Johor DAP chief, says he was alerted to the matter after an online post alleged the building that was meant for voluntary fire brigade activities in Kampung Baru Ayer Hitam had been turned into Barisan Nasional’s election machinery headquarters.
“Since its completion, the said building in Ayer Hitam has been blatantly used as the local headquarters of the Crisis Relief Squad of MCA, which is an outright party outfit,” says Liew.
Liew called upon MCA Deputy President and current Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong to explain to the Malaysian taxpayers why his campaign centre is in a government-funded building.
“He must explain to the public. This is a gross abuse of power and a breach of the Government’s own rules.
“As a senior member of Barisan National, Wee should have not utilised government resources and facilities to campaign for his own re-election in Ayer Hitam,” he said.
Liew added the use of the government’s vast resources for political campaign purposes by the ruling coalition diminish the legitimacy and credibility of the election process as it poses an uneven playing field for the Opposition, Pakatan Harapan.
The structure in Kampung Baru Ayer Hitam was built in 2015 and funded through the “Program Mesra Rakyat” which is directly funded by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department.
