GEORGE TOWN: The police here have not received any information that fugitive Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, will be extradited to Penang following his alleged arrest in Hong Kong, says state police chief Comm Datuk Seri A. Thaiveegan.
He said the state police department has not received any information or instructions on the matter.
“I have not heard anything on such a matter till now,” he said after launching the voluntary traffic team of Penang Chinese Girls’ Primary School appreciation ceremony at the school Thursday.
Without elaborating, he said there was an ongoing investigation here on the alleged 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) mastermind and that the police were waiting to get Low’s statement.
“I hope he has been arrested,” he said outside Parliament earlier Thursday.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the HK reports need to be verified.
“I cannot confirm it yet and I will have to check,” he said when asked to comment.
The IGP said that an Interpol Red Notice has already been sent out for the elusive businessman.
“We are also not sure of his exact location. We don’t have complete information.
“Based on our intelligence, we believe that he has travelled to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and China. That is the latest that we have.
“But we are not exactly sure of his current whereabouts.
“If we have his exact location, we will narrow it down and seek help from the relevant country. It is still an ongoing process,” he said.
