Singapore: FA and UEFA Cup winner Stephane Henchoz reckoned Liverpool’s pre-season defensive buys have not proved up to scratch, but expressed confidence that the team can still meet its top four aspirations.
The former centre-back for Liverpool on Friday (Nov 14) said that based on this season’s performances, the acquisition of Dejan Lovren, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno have not proved to be the answer for the Anfield club’s defensive woes. He also added that he was “not sure” about Simon Mignolet’s place in the team.
That said, all defensive units need to play games and know each other well to become strong, and this is something he hoped to see happen. The former Swiss international was in town to play in the Liverpool Legends football match against a Singapore Masters team this Saturday.
Asked if Liverpool’s stuttering start to the season has scuppered their pre-season goals, Henchoz said: “Top four is still a realistic target, because the league is very tight this season. It must still be the target for the team.”
Henchoz was speaking on the sidelines of a meet-and-greet with Liverpool fans. Organisers said 100 passes were handed out for the session at One Raffles Place.
