RAWANG: Six armed men robbed a goldsmith shop inside a shopping mall in Persiaran Anggun here, this evening.
The suspects, all wearing helmets, barged into the shop, located only about 100m from one of mall’s entrances at about 6.45pm.
One of the suspects fired a shot into the air before the men started smashing the display panels and sweeping the jewelleries into their bags.
They then made off with the stolen loot.
Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Ali Ahmad said no one was injured in the incident.
“The unidentified suspects were armed with a pistol and two hammers. They smashed four display panels before they fled with the bags of jewelleries.
“During the incident, four workers and two customers were inside the shop, but all six were unharmed,” he said when contacted today, adding that the losses were still undetermined.
Ali said the closed-circuit television footage retrieved from the premises would be scrutinised.
The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery and Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
One of the witnesses, Nichols See, said she was chatting with friends when she saw a group of masked men ran into the shop.
See, a sales assistant, who was only 20m away from where the incident took place, said she ran for cover when she heard the gunshot.
“I then saw them smashing the display glasses before they escaped the same way they came in.
“It happened so fast,” she said when met at the scene.
Some passers-by also managed to capture the two-minute incident on their mobile phones and videos of the robbery have been circulated on social media.
