IPOH: Perak Police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan has lambasted Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz (pic) for allegedly making false accusations against the police.
On Sunday, the Tourism and Culture Minister claimed that his proposed debate with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was cancelled because several Umno leaders were instructed by police to lodge reports against the event.
In a statement Tuesday, DCP Hasnan said the claims were not true and he deemed them to be “wild accusations”.
“I would like to reiterate that the police here are not involved in any political bickering or siding anyone in this country. Perak police are professional and will only take action based on rules and regulations,” said DCP Hasnan.
Nazri said he had obtained copies of five police reports which he said are all identical in their format and with similar statements opposed to the scheduled debate.
The Umno supreme council member claimed that among those who signed the reports were an Umno branch leader in his constituency, an Umno Youth member and a village head.
Nazri said he was angered by the police action because the final impression given was that he had backed out of the debate, which was originally scheduled for March 25 at the Maktab Rendah Sains Mara in Kuala Kangsar, Perak
Police however denied the organisers a permit.
The debate was then postponed to April 7 at the Karangkraf headquarters in Shah Alam, and had received an initial approval from police before it was withdrawn at the last minute due to “security concerns”.
