Light airplane skids off Tioman airport runway; VIP passengers hurt

ROMPIN: A light private aircraft carrying VIP passengers skidded while attempting to land at Tekek Airport in Pulau Tioman on Thursday, leaving all four people on board slightly injured.

Textile businessman Datuk Anuar Hassan, 48; his wife Datin Siti Norlaila Abu Bakar, 46; Anuar’s personal assistant Muhammad Abdul A’lim Salleh, 28; and pilot Wan Mohd Faizul Rizal, 35, suffered bruises and scrapes in the 12.50pm mishap.

The Cirrus 9M-ZWR, which is owned by Anuar, had departed Senai airport in Johor and was headed to Pulau Tioman, where the entrepreneur was to attend a business meeting.

But a heavy cross-wind buffeted the airplane as it attempted to land, causing it to skid off the runway, crash through the airport’s fencing and come to a stop next to a grassy embankment.

“The three passengers and pilot suffered light knocks. They were given medical treatment,” District police chief Deputy Superintendent Azli Mohd Noor said.

It is learnt that despite the accident, the airport is now operating as normal.
