Mohd Fitri, Vivian Khoo Crowned UM Sportsman, Sportswoman For 2014

PETALING JAYA, March 25 (Bernama) — National hockey player Mohd Fitri Shaari and National shuttler Vivian Khoo were crowned University Malaya (UM) Sportsman and Sportswoman for 2014.

Mohd Fitri, 22, the brother of another National hockey player, Mohd Faizal, was picked based on his contribution to the National teams bronze medal winning feat in the Champions Challenge I held in Kuantan, Pahang last year.

The Sports Science student was also crowned the Best Player of the Tournament in the World Hockey League held in Singapore in January.

Mohd Fitri will be in the team that heads to Brasschaat, Belgium for the semifinals of the World Hockey League from June 21 to July 5.

Vivian Khoo who partnered Woon Khe Wei to end a 44-year wait for a medal in badminton at the Asian Games when the duo clinched a bronze medal in Incheon, South Korea, was a clear favourite in the woman’s category.

The duo had also contributed gold medals in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games through the women’s doubles and team events.

National sports critic, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Kim received the UM Sports Icon award while National athletes Muhammad Irfan Shamshuddin, Nauraj Singh and Iskandar Alwi from athletics received special awards for representing the country at the Asian University Games, SEA Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

Also on the list of recipients were Pandalela Rinong (diving), Haziq Kamaruddin, Afiq Bazil Bakri (archery), Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin (badminton), Wendy Ng and Mohamad Amsyar Azman (diving).
