TASEK GELUGOR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today reminded the Penang government to avoid undertaking or approving development projects which can affect the environment.
He said such projects would only aggravate the situation further in the future.
“All development projects should follow stringent guidelines set.
“The Penang government must take into account all hillslope development projects, including housing, to prevent disasters from happening in the future,” he said.
Najib was speaking to the press after visiting more than 200 flood victims at the Sekolah Agama Al-Riduan, here today.
Najib is on a half-day visit to Penang to assess the flood situation here.
Present were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Cabinet ministers Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong.
Also present was Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
Najib said he was satisfied with the cooperation between the Federal and state governments.
“Our priority is the flood victims. We will ensure the best is given to them,” he added.
Several non-governmental organisations had claimed that overdevelopment and hillslope development had contributed to the floods in the state.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had also previously urged the Penang government to stop all hillslope developments in the northern state.
