KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has taken another swipe at Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) chairman and former party president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad over the latter’s friendship with DAP.
In his speech at Umno’s 71st anniversary celebrations, the Prime Minister added that unlike the divided Opposition, Barisan Nasional is a united family with a clear vision and mission.
“Sadly, even after the 70 years Umno has been fighting for Malays and Malaysians, after 60 years of independence, who would have thought that there are former national leaders, including a statesman that we once honoured, would act to betray our party, topple the party leadership, wage war against Umno and Barisan?” he asked.
Najib added that the “statesman”, understood to be Dr Mahathir, was willing to stand with the enemy in order to achieve his personal agenda.
Najib also echoed the view of PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang that the relationship between PAS and Umno is one of mature politics, that there can be differences in political opinion but that the two parties must stand together on issues relating to the rakyat’s well-being.
Earlier in his speech, Najib also teased about the next general election by saying that the party is ready to face it.
“Everyone here has come from all over the country. I would like to ask you, are we strong enough? Are we ready? Can we dissolve Parliament tomorrow? This is our strength. Umno’s extraordinary strength,” said Najib.
To illustrate the party’s support, Najib pointed out the massive crowd that gathered, saying that it was only a fraction of Umno supporters and that there are three million other members not in the stadium.
The large gathering of Umno members from across the country started with maghrib prayers, followed by a prize presentation ceremony of the sports carnival, creative essay writing and video editing competitions.
