New science ship to set off from Hobart

THE Australian science agency’s new research vessel is preparing to embark on her maiden expert voyage, carrying world-leading technology to the Southern Ocean to conduct climate change observations.

THE CSIRO’s $120 million RV Investigator will set off from Hobart on Saturday carrying a set of deep-water moorings which will be anchored to the ocean floor to record hourly readings of temperature, salinity, acidity, biological activity, ocean currents, nutrients and atmospheric conditions.

The data will be relayed by satellite to Hobart for analysis and used by national and international research bodies.
