Pas calls for CJ, Appeals Court President appointments to be respected

Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif was reappointed as Chief Justice for a period of three years commencing Aug 4 this year.

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 July : Pas has called for the recent appointments of the Chief Justice and the President of the Court of Appeal to be respected.

In a statement, its secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said that the legal institution serves an important role in ensuring that justice is upheld in the country.

He said based on research conducted by Pas, the party is confident that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V and the Conference of Rulers had access to proper legal advice (under Clause (1A), Article 122 of the Federal Constitution) before deciding to extend the appointments of Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif and Tan Sri Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin for another three years.

Pas, however, feels that relevant stakeholders should have acted proactively in providing detailed information on the appointments in order to avoid confusion among the public, and prolonged legal conflict that could harm the country and the people.

The Islamic party also supports the Malaysian Bar Council’s recommendation for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to be held for its members to discuss the issue and weigh in on the matter.

Md Raus and Zulkefli Ahmad were re-appointed to their posts in April this year.

The retention of Md Raus beyond the mandatory retirement age has since been criticised, with some questioning the legality and constitutionality of the appointment.
