Perlis mufti hits out at 19 who filed legal bid against Zakir Naik

PETALING JAYA: Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Asri Zainul Abidin has hit out at the 19 Malaysians who initiated legal proceedings against the Government and four others to get a court order to declare preacher Dr Zakir Naik (pic) a threat to national security.

“What proof is there that he is a threat? Are they sensitive because there were Hindus who converted to Islam? Are there other reasons?” said Mohd Asri on his official Facebook page Wednesday.

The application to the court was filed Wednesday by lawyers, human rights activists, businessmen and also former deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waytha Moorthy, the chairman of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).

Others in the group include activist Dr Lim Teck Ghee, Sabah STAR (Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku) president Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and lawyer Siti Zabedah Kassim.

They are applying to the High Court to get a declaration that Dr Zakir is a threat to public order, morals, the economy, social harmony and national education, and are also seeking a declaration that he is a threat to national unity and to peace in multiracial Malaysia.

In the court papers, the plaintiffs are also seeking for a court order to immediately revoke the status of Dr Zakir as a permanent resident if it has been granted to him.
