Possible misunderstanding behind woman’s claim of police indifference

CHERAS,.  A possible misunderstanding may have led a woman to claim that police were indifferent to her situation, which was highlighted in a video that went viral on Tuesday.

“There is a possibility that a misunderstanding occurred,” said city police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.

“When the sentry approached the car that was following her, he instructed them to obey the law and not harass her.

“They left after the sentry told them to make a police report if they were unhappy about the situation.

“She was also allowed to go into the police station, but she stayed in her car for about 10 minutes before driving off,” said Comm Mazlan in a press conference Tuesday night at the Alam Damai police station here.

He added that once she entered the station, she was in a safe environment – especially since the suspects had driven away.

Comm Mazlan added security protocols required sentries to assess the situation if it was late at night.

However, he stressed that once the sentry had identified the cause, he immediately allowed her in.

The victim made a report at 3pm Tuesday and the police have apprehended the three suspects.

All three men are 18 years old and the case will be investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

“We will also investigate the claims made in the video. We will be fair to all parties,” said Comm Mazlan.

The woman in a five-minute video shared on her Facebook page, claimed she was on her way home after picking her son up at 10pm when she noticed a group of men following her in a BMW car.

She appeared to be in distress and claimed that the car had tailed her all the way to her housing area and even attempted to block her car’s path.

Fearing for her own safety, she drove to a police station in Cheras and honked her horn repeatedly for “a good five minutes” when she was near the police station.

She claimed that a policeman on guard outside refused to let her into the station’s compound, and was even rude to her.
