Qatar Pledges US$20 Million To UN Humanitarian Pooled Fund

NEW YORK, Oct 1 (Bernama) – Qatar has pledged US$20 million to the United Nations Humanitarian Pooled Fund based in Turkey, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

An agreement was signed at the UN headquarters in New York by Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Muraikhi, international development department director at Qatar’s Foreign Affairs Ministry and UN under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator Valerie Amos.

Amos said in a statement Qatar’s contribution to the fund would enable the UN and its partners to assist those in need in hard-to-reach areas in Syria.

The Fund provides financial support to shelter operations, health and food, and helps maintain vital aid operations of humanitarian agencies across borders.

Around 11 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance in Syria.
