School’s Success Depends On Integrity Of Its Head – Muhyiddin

SEREMBAN, April 6 (Bernama) — School heads play a role in providing leadership, encouragement and support to teachers and students besides creating a conducive and healthy environment which promotes the teaching and learning process, said deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also the education minister, said the success of a school was dependent on the role and integrity of its head.

The most important dimension which must be played by the head was the teaching leadership dimension especially in shaping the climate and culture of teaching and learning (PdP), he said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the 54th Malaysian School Heads Education Management Conference here today.

The three-day conference which began today with its theme of “Leadership of School Heads Spearhead National Education Transformation” was attended by 760 headmasters from throughout the country.

Muhyiddin said school heads who were effective were usually dedicated, had a sense of responsibility, highly confident and resilient.

“As leaders of the school, school heads must be confident and ready to lead teachers in carrying out their PdP. The ability to manage teachers and students effectively will help the school attain its objectives quickly,” Muhyiddin said.

He added that the school heads must also be able to understand, appreciate and implement policies which had been drawn up in order to achieve the aspirations of the country in line with the National Education Philosophy.

“The ability to translate the policies into action requires specific skills in the school heads,” he said.

This, he added, was important to ensure that all information regarding the policies and implementation process was accurately conveyed to the implementers, especially teachers in schools.
