SEBENARNYA.MY launched for checking news validity

CYBERJAYA, March 14 2017 : The SEBENARNYA.MY portal was launched today for the public to check on the authenticity of news spread through the social websites.

Launched by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak, the portal developed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is among efforts taken by the government to curb the spread of false news and ensure the public receive truthful news.

In his speech at the launch, Salleh said related information would be gathered, analysed, validated and uploaded to the portal for reference by the public regardless of their political background, Bernama reported.

He said till now, the MCMC had identified close to 1,000 false news of public interest being spread in the country.

“False news not only confuse but could also threaten security, prosperity and wellbeing of the people and country.

“This does not only happen in Malaysia but also in the United States, Indonesia and the European countries,” he said.

MIC Youth welcomes the portal

Meanwhile, MIC Youth lauds Communications and Multimedia Ministry move to launch a one stop centre portal ‘www.sebenarnya.my‘ as a check and balance to examine fake news very common and rampant in Malaysia.

Its Youth chief, Dato’ Sivarraajh Chandran said the government’s initiative will certainly help people to verify and report any fake news.

Many portals have been spinning fake news till the internet users unable to verify its authencity.

“In Malaysia, the trend has also made a hit whereby Internet users duped to believe and disseminate fake news within a stroke of the keyboard.

“Since we will be facing General Election anytime, fake news will surely be disseminated and with the new portal, certainly it will help Internet users to verify the news authencity.

“MIC Youth hope people will be rational and understand on the authencity of any news shared via social media.” he said via a press statement.
