Thai King Cancels 87th Birthday Ceremony

BANGKOK, Dec 5 (Bernama) — Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Friday cancelled a scheduled public appearance but this did not stop people from celebrating his 87th birthday, Xinhua news agency reported.

King Bhumibol had planned to grant a royal audience at the Amarin Vinitchai Hall at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

Doctors advised the king to remain at Siriraj Hospital where he has been receiving medical treatment in the last two months, the Royal Household Bureau announced in the morning.

King Bhumibol along with Queen Sirikit and other royal family members were initially scheduled to appear at the ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

Several thousand people from across the country have gathered at Siriraj Hospital since the early hours of the morning.

The crowd held national and royal flags and chanted “Long live the king”, hoping for the king to make an appearance.

Despite the cancellation, many well-wishers have flocked to the Grand Palace where cabinet members, legislators and political figures including Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and former premier Yingluck Shinawatra have signed birthday messages for the king.

A range of activities have been held nationwide including blood donations, tree planting, running and cycling to celebrate the king’s birthday.

King Bhumibol was born on Dec 5, 1927.
