KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 29 – Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed has quit UMNO as a protest against the current leadership.
In an emergency press meet, Mahathir told the reporters that he felt ashamed with the happenings within the party.
“ I feel disappointed with Najib’s party and all the shameful happenings.
“ Some quarters claim that I left the party because of my son but that is not the reason.
“ I will ensure Najib will not become the next Prime Minister again,” said Mahathir.
He also hopes suspended deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will follow his footstep to quit the party.
At the same time Mahathir’s wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah also quit the party.
Mahathir added that he will attend the ‘March for Freedom ‘rally planned end of March to give more pressure for Najib to step down as Prime Minister.
In another related development Batu Kawan UMNO vice chairman Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan has also quit the party with immediate effect.
“ I have lost the trust in the party’s leadership and they are in the brink of destruction.
“ To me UMNO is no longer relevant and it is a dead party walking around,” said Khairuddin in a statement.
