The White House has been placed on lockdown after an intruder jumped the fence as President Barack Obama and his family celebrated Thanksgiving. The man cleared the fence near the briefing room and West Wing areas of the presidential mansion on Thursday afternoon, US media report.
The intruder was quickly apprehended by armed US Secret Service officers who then conducted a sweep of the area, according to reports. The man was possibly holding some sort of sign or folder and was dressed in white pants, reports Fox News. According to his public schedule, Mr Obama is at the White House with his family to celebrate the US holiday.
America’s first family was expected to dine on thyme-roasted turkey, honey-baked ham and prime rib. Also on the menu was kale, macaroni and cheese and apple pie.
The incident comes just months after security was upgraded at the White House, including spikes being added to a perimeter fence. The steps were taken following embarrassing security breaches at the home of the US President.
Security has been heightened in the US following the 13 November attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.
