AI will not replace humans, but a tool to augment operations, says French Cyber Security expert

#Side Line Interview

KUALA LUMPUR – Last week, I attended a one-day seminar on ‘Cyber Insights: Power of Cyber Intelligence’ an event organized by Siaga Informatics, a premier digital forensic agency based in Malaysia that sets standards and develop best practices for the industry. Thanks to the organizer for counting us in.

I had the opportunity to meet, greet, and photo op session with the speaker from France, Mr. Laurent Oudut, Co-Founder and CTO of Tehtris, after the one-day session.

For more than 20 years, Laurent had technical skills used in very sensitive environments such as the Defense Pole of the French Atomic Energy Commission, the French Ministry of Defense, the UN, etc.

Laurent even participated in numerous commissions, training sessions, and national expert reports, within organizations such as ANSSI or for the French Prime Minister and specialized in intrusion tests and the fight against cyber espionage.

The company was co-founded with Elena Poincet, an operational expert in the management and specialized teams for the French Ministry of the Armed Forces. With her experience, she embarked on Tehtris to fight against cyber espionage and cyber sabotage.

While both of us had a chat about the company and cyber intelligence, espionage, and common sabotage activities, I managed to get an interesting angle of the story that I was really hoping to share some little understanding about  ‘Artificial Intelligence’.

Artificial Intelligence has been a big buzzword with lots of debates going around; about whether it should be implemented or whether it will disrupt the human race including a few people who are against regulating it as it may curtail innovation capabilities.

Now AI in short form has many interpretations, but when I Google, this is the nearest meaning I could hold for now no doubt we have ample variations and meaning – Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. Specific applications of AI include expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition, and machine vision.

The 3V rule

According to Laurent, in Tehtris they use the ‘3V’ rule to augment AI in cyber security operations within their scenario and framework.

“The first V will be Volume. When you are human, you have too many things to monitor and it creates a fatigue effect.

“Even if you are an expert in Manage, Detect, and Response (MDR), your function is to look at many logs on the screen line by line.”

“And it is very complex, if you make an error then can miss an imminent attack.  So when you have the AI as the technology it will support to review the logs.

“Then Second V is Velocity, where you have to review the logs within an hour it will be nearly impossible and very tiring, done by a single human or a team. So again AI helps us here.

“And the third is Variaty, where you have many different devices and operating systems- Android, IoS, Windows, Linux, web applications, mobile apps, and other peripherals.

“So all this can be handled with the innovative way deploying AI capabilities,” he said.
