ASEAN25: PETRA Prioritizes APAEC and APG in Energy Agenda
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair for 2025, has announced two key Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) in the energy sector, as outlined by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).
The two focus areas are the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2025, Phase 1: 2026-2030, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Enhancing the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).
Strengthening Energy Cooperation in ASEAN
According to a statement from PETRA, these strategic documents are critical for fostering continuous collaboration among ASEAN member states to develop the energy sector. They aim to ensure sustainable energy supply and security across the region.
“The APG initiative will be a focal point in related meetings, with the goal of finalizing the MoU this year. This agreement will emphasize upgrading cross-border electricity transmission infrastructure, enabling the trade of more clean energy sources such as hydropower, solar, and wind,” the statement read.
The initiative seeks to optimize the use of clean energy resources, guarantee energy supply for citizens, and deliver significant benefits to ASEAN nations.
Key ASEAN Energy Meetings in 2025
As part of its chairmanship, PETRA will oversee three major energy-related meetings:
Special Senior Officials’ Meeting on Energy in Langkawi, Kedah (January 22-24).
Senior Officials’ Meeting on Energy in Kuching, Sarawak (June 16-20).
ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting in Kuala Lumpur (September 22-26).
The official launch of the ASEAN Energy Meetings 2025, themed “Powering ASEAN: Bridging Boundaries, Building Prosperity,” was officiated today by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Malaysia assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship on January 1, 2025, under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” This marks the fifth time Malaysia has chaired ASEAN, following previous terms in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015.
