Authorities are investigating the cause of tourists falling ill at Perhentian – MOTAC
KUALA TERENGGANU: The responsible agency has and is taking action to identify the cause of the incident where a group of tourists experienced dizziness, vomiting and fever after returning from a holiday on Perhentian Kecil Island in Besut.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) today, the matter was informed by the Terengganu State Tourism Department which was contacted by the ministry to get a clear picture of the issue.
“The Terengganu State Tourism Department informed that it has communicated with several agencies at the state level such as the Besut District Office and the Besut District Health Office and was informed that the responsible agencies have and are taking action to identify the main cause of the incident,” according to MOTAC.
According to the statement, MOTAC takes seriously matters involving the safety and health of tourists, whether domestic or from abroad, and such incidents need to be dealt with thoroughly to ensure that the government’s desire to restore the country’s tourism industry in the near future can be achieved.
Yesterday, an online news portal reported that a group of 40 tourists consisting of 27 adults and 13 children who went on a three-night vacation to Pulau Perhentian Kecil fell ill after swimming in the island’s waters.
According to the report, some of them had diarrhea and high fever immediately after returning and some were hospitalized, while a one-year-old child was diagnosed with typhoid and two other children suffered from blood poisoning.
