Bakun Dam among success stories for change in Malaysia, China

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 18): The Bakun Hydroelectric Dam was one of the projects cited as a successful case study of how mega projects impacted transformation for growth between Malaysia and China.

This was among the highlights of a leadership session entitled “The Impact of Mega Projects: Catalysts for Transformation in Malaysia and China” at the Malaysia-China Summit 2024 held here today.

The session explored how mega projects in Malaysia and China are shaping future economic landscapes and enhancing social inclusion.

According to Ni Qingjiu, managing director of the China Communications Construction Company (M) Sdn Bhd, the Bakun Dam project, as well as the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) 2 projects, were reflective of the success of cooperation between the two countries.

“Those projects show us how to connect the region and how to improve the system and also create an economic benefit for both Malaysia and China,” he said during the panel session.

“This helps to balance the development and create a new opportunity for business and tourism.

“It also strengthens the ties between Malaysia’s development plan and China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

“I think in the future, we can use this model to build more economy corridors that connects Malaysia with other parts of Asean.”

Ni was involved in the Bakun Dam project back when he was with Sinohydro Corporation — one of the joint venture (JV) companies in the China Hydro JV consortium involved with the Bakun Dam project.

The president of the China Enterprises Chamber of Commerce in Malaysia (CECCM) said these projects bring shared economic benefits apart from the transfer of technology.

“They help to create jobs, boost local businesses, and help the economy grow. And also, we are training with our local talents as our partners.

“This improves the local skills and ensures both sides have the benefits. I think in the future, we can continue this success by forming a long-term partnership to maintain and upgrade those projects.

“The success of these projects shows that China and Malaysia can work together to build strong connections, improve the transportation system, and share our economic growth.

“This can be a model for more projects in the future and help both countries grow together.”

The Malaysia China Summit 2024 Leadership Conference on Dec 16-17 seeks to highlight issues that chart the future of Malaysia-China and Asean relationships.
