BASF collaborates with ERTH to promote electronic waste (e-waste) recycling

  • BASF partners with ERTH to raise awareness and make e-waste recycling more accessible
  • More than 2,400 BASF employees in Malaysia invited to properly recycle their household e-waste
  • The campaign allows disposal of digital and electrical items in a safe and responsible manner

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia – June 28, 2024 – BASF group in Malaysia collaborated with E-waste Recycling Through Heroes (ERTH), a social enterprise that specializes in collecting and recycling electronic waste (e-waste) from households & businesses through freelance gig-economy workers, to launch an e-waste recycling campaign for more than 2,400 of its employees.

The campaign that runs from July 1 – November 30, 2024, will encourage proper e-waste recycling to combat the effects of environmental pollution by providing on-site collection points at BASF offices and sites throughout the country. Employees could also mail their e-waste via the nearest post office. This is a good platform to safely dispose digital and electrical items, ranging from small gadgets such as handphones and hair dryers, to bigger appliances, for example blenders and desktop computers.

Through this platform, cash rewards in exchange for e-waste items recycled by the employees will be pooled together and donated to a charity organization or charity cause relevant to each entity. The management will also match the collected amount from their respective entities to amplify efforts in making a positive impact on our community.

“Globally, BASF is well on our way in achieving net zero CO2 emissions1 by 2050. On top of advocating company’s sustainability goals, our employees can participate in this campaign to materialize their personal commitment to protect the environment. This campaign is also in line with the Department of Environment’s effort to increase awareness on the importance of an environmentally sound management of e-waste,” said Vimala Arumugam, Managing Director of BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and BASF South East Asia Pte Ltd.

ERTH founder Mohamed Tarek El-Fatatry welcomes such partnership: “We hope that campaigns like this will inspire more people in the country to practice e-waste recycling and help minimize environmental pollution and potential health risks.”

The launch event was also attended by Mark Bueltel-Herz, Managing Director of BASF Asia-Pacific Service Centre Sdn Bhd and Tan Aik Meam, Managing Director of BASF PETRONAS Chemicals Sdn Bhd.

The campaign is open to all BASF Group employees in Malaysia, which includes BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, BASF Asia-Pacific Service Centre Sdn Bhd, BASF Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, as well as BASF PETRONAS Chemicals Sdn Bhd, Toray BASF PBT Resin Sdn Bhd and BASF See Sen Sdn Bhd.

1 The goal includes Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Other greenhouse gases are converted into CO2 equivalents according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
