Biden to attend G20 in September, VP Harris to ASEAN Summit
WASHINGTON, Aug 23 (Bernama-dpa) — US President Joe Biden will travel to India in September for the G20 summit, his National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday, reported German news agency (dpa).
Biden will travel to New Delhi from Sept 7 to 10 to attend the summit of G20 countries and will also hold various talks on the sidelines of the meeting.
Sullivan did not initially give details of possible bilateral meetings in New Delhi but he said the focus will be on global issues, such as the fight against climate change, energy issues and mitigating the economic and social impact of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
The summit of the G20 Heads of State and Government will take place in New Delhi on Sept 9 and 10. The G20 includes the European Union (EU) and the major economies of all continents, including the US, China, Russia and Germany.
Biden will not attend the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, which will take place just before the G20 meeting.
Instead, US Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Jakarta from Sept 4 to 7 to represent the United States at the summit.
When asked whether Biden’s absence from the ASEAN meeting was a disappointing signal to the region, Sullivan argued that no other president before had shown as much commitment to the Indo-Pacific region as Biden.
