Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan being revised, launch expected in 2026, says rep

SIBU (Feb 3): The blueprint of Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan is currently being revised, with the details to be revealed by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In stating this, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng pointed out this large-scale redevelopment plan would include affordable housing – an area of concern for many people.

“The project is expected to be officially launched in 2026,” he said.

Joseph was presenting his constituency’s ‘report card’ to those present at a Lunar New Year 2025 event hosted by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek branch here, Sunday night, which hosted more than 1,500 guests including the branch chairman Dato Chieng Buong Toon, the event’s organising chairman Councillor Kiing Teck Ho, SUPP Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong, and SUPP Nangka chairman Chua Beng Seng.

Adding on, Joseph said upon the completion of the redevelopment plan, the Bukit Assek area would be transformed.

“There will be drastic changes in and enhancements to the infrastructure and public facilities, transportation and residential environment.

“This will bring about significant benefits to the overall outlook of Bukit Assek.”

In his speech, Joseph also talked about the Self-Employed Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) contribution, mandatory for licensed hawkers and traders, effective Jan 1 this year, where he helped contributed an amount of RM13,399.20.

Additionally, the assemblyman also said RM132,000 worth of assistance was channelled to the victims adversely affected by the freak storm that struck Sibu on April 5, 2023.

“This RM1,000 assistance to each of 132 families was channelled from my Bukit Assek service centre, and this did not include the RM1,000 from Sarawak government to each affected family,” he added.
