Canada Files WTO Complaint Against US Steel and Aluminum Tariffs
ISTANBUL: The World Trade Organization (WTO) has confirmed that Canada has filed a complaint regarding the tariff measures imposed by US President Donald Trump, according to Anadolu Agency (AA).
“Canada has requested dispute settlement consultations with the United States regarding the imposition of import duties on certain steel and aluminum products from Canada,” the WTO stated in an official announcement.
Canada claims that the measure, which ended Canada’s exemption from additional duties on specific steel and aluminum products and increased tariff rates on certain aluminum products effective March 12, is inconsistent with the US obligations under the 1994 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the WTO said.
On February 10, Trump announced tariffs on global steel and aluminum imports, claiming the move was necessary to protect US industries and domestic manufacturers.
Last Wednesday, the 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports proposed by Trump officially took effect.
Previously, on March 5, Canada had filed another WTO complaint just one day after the US tariffs on Canadian goods were enforced on March 4.
Following negotiations between the two countries, Trump later delayed the tariff implementation on certain products for one month.
