Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE to Provide 2 GWh of Energy Storage for UK Projects in Partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners
KITCHENER, ON, Jan. 13, 2025 / — Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) has announced a significant contract with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) through its flagship fund, CI IV. The agreement involves delivering 2 GWh DC of battery energy storage systems for two major projects in Scotland: the Coalburn 2 Project (1 GWh DC) in South Lanarkshire and the Devilla Project (1 GWh DC) in Fife, located near Kincardine. Both sites are set to begin construction in 2027, with the systems designed to provide a two-hour energy storage dispatch capability.
As part of this contract, e-STORAGE, a tier-1 global energy storage provider and majority-owned subsidiary of Canadian Solar, will supply around 450 SolBank 3.0 battery containers for both projects. The company will also oversee the long-term performance and operational management of the facilities, under a service agreement with CIP.
The combined 2 GWh energy storage capacity will be enough to power approximately 250,000 homes for an entire day, based on typical UK electricity consumption. The projects are crucial in stabilizing the national grid, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting the UK’s clean energy transition.
Upon completion, Coalburn 2 and Devilla are expected to offset about 4.57 million metric tons of CO2 emissions over their lifespans, contributing significantly to the fight against climate change. The projects will enhance the country’s renewable energy infrastructure, particularly offshore wind, and will include environmental initiatives like tree planting and biodiversity enhancement.
Nischal Agarwal, partner at CIP, emphasized that these battery storage investments align with the UK’s goal of a clean power system by 2030 and a net-zero carbon economy by 2050. “Strategically located battery storage projects like Coalburn and Devilla are key to improving energy security, grid flexibility, and accelerating the deployment of low-cost renewables,” he said.
Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, expressed excitement about continuing the partnership with CIP, noting that these projects are the largest of their kind in Europe. “These groundbreaking projects represent a significant milestone for Scotland and the UK’s energy future,” he said. “Our 2 GWh of storage capacity will enhance grid stability, alleviate network constraints, and unlock the full potential of offshore wind energy.”
