Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE to Supply 960 MWh Battery Systems for Major Australian Energy Project

KITCHENER, ON, Feb. 11, 2025 – Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) has secured a contract to deliver a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Australia, further cementing its role in the global renewable energy transition.

The agreement, signed through Canadian Solar’s majority-owned subsidiary CSI Solar’s e-STORAGE division, will see the company supply 240 MW/960 MWh of battery storage to the Summerfield project—one of South Australia’s largest planned energy storage initiatives. The project is backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) through its Copenhagen Infrastructure V fund and is expected to break ground in 2025.

Strengthening South Australia’s Renewable Energy Ambitions
Situated in Murraylands, 55 kilometers east of Adelaide, the Summerfield project is a key component of South Australia’s goal of achieving 100% net renewable energy by 2027. By capturing excess wind and solar energy during the day and releasing it when demand peaks, the battery system will enhance grid stability and energy reliability.

Jørn Hammer, Head of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) Australia, emphasized the significance of the deal:

“Australia needs large-scale battery storage to ensure grid stability and provide reliable, affordable power. The Summerfield project is a major step forward, and we are proud to partner with Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE to help South Australia reach its renewable energy targets.”

Cutting-Edge Battery Technology and Execution Expertise
Under the agreement, e-STORAGE will provide full Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services, integrating more than 200 SolBank 3.0 battery containers into the project. The company will also oversee long-term operational management to ensure the system’s performance and efficiency.

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, highlighted the project’s strategic importance:

“Being selected for this landmark initiative is a testament to our advanced battery technology and strong execution capabilities. With over 1.5 GWh of battery storage under construction in Australia, e-STORAGE is solidifying its position as a premier supplier in the region.”

Canadian Solar’s Global Renewable Energy Footprint
Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Ontario, Canada, Canadian Solar is a major player in solar photovoltaics and battery storage solutions. The company has delivered 142 GW of solar modules globally and shipped over 8 GWh of battery energy storage as of late 2024. Its project pipeline includes 26 GWp of solar capacity and 66 GWh of battery storage under development worldwide.

As the demand for large-scale energy storage grows, Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE continues to expand its global presence, playing a pivotal role in enabling the shift to clean, reliable power solutions.
