China Issues First-Ever Passenger Drone Operation Certificates, Ushering in New Era of Low-Altitude Travel
GUANGZHOU, March 31 – China has officially taken a significant leap into the future of air mobility with the issuance of its first-ever operation certificates for autonomous passenger drones, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
Two Chinese companies – EHang Holdings Limited based in Guangdong and Hefei Hey Airlines Co., Ltd. from Anhui – have become the nation’s pioneering firms authorised to commercially operate passenger-carrying drones. This development marks China’s formal entry into the commercial phase of autonomous aerial passenger services.
The operation certificate confirms that a drone model meets all safety and operational standards required for carrying passengers. With this certification, both companies are now permitted to launch paid services in designated areas, including city sightseeing, short-distance tours, and other services that fall under China’s expanding low-altitude economy.
Residents and tourists in Guangzhou and Hefei will soon be able to purchase tickets for these autonomous drone flights, offering them a first-hand experience of urban air mobility – from scenic aerial views of the city to practical short-range travel.
This milestone positions China at the forefront of the global race toward commercial drone aviation, further cementing its role as a leader in next-generation transportation innovation.
