Driving Malaysia’s Sustainability Goals: DPM Fadillah Yusof Shares PETRA Achievements
Kuala Lumpur | 24 November 2024 | Sunday – YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, appeared live on Selamat Pagi Malaysia (Nadi Seri Pagi) on RTM TV1. He shared the progress and achievements of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) as part of the 2 Years of Malaysia MADANI initiative.
Advancing PETRA’s Vision
Dato’ Sri Fadillah highlighted his commitment to continuing the planned initiatives while introducing new priorities under PETRA. One of the ministry’s primary focuses has been the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). This roadmap lays out a strategic direction to ensure energy security, accessibility, and sustainability, aligning Malaysia with global efforts to transition to a green economy.
Among the key achievements:
• Renewable Energy (RE) Goals: Malaysia has set an ambitious target of increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity supply mix to 70% by 2050, a
significant leap from 25% before NETR’s introduction. This underscores the nation’s commitment to a sustainable, low-carbon energy system.
Transforming the Water Sector
Dato’ Sri Fadillah emphasized that water sector transformation remains a core agenda under PETRA. This effort is pivotal to supporting Malaysia MADANI’s vision of sustainability, well-being, and security.
• National NRW Program: A key initiative involves enhancing the implementation of the National Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Program to reduce water losses. This includes the
critical replacement of aging pipelines nationwide, in collaboration with state governments.
• Water Loss Reduction Targets: The program aims to reduce NRW levels to 31% by 2025 and further to 28.8% by 2030 in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of
Labuan.
• Water Transformation Roadmap 2040 (AIR 2040): Launched on 29 October 2024, AIR 2040 is a national agenda to ensure water security and sustainability. It seeks to
modernize the water sector, making it a dynamic contributor to Malaysia’s economic growth.
Acknowledgment of Support
Dato’ Sri Fadillah expressed gratitude to RTM for the opportunity to share PETRA’s achievements with the public. He also thanked the hosts, Ridwan Mustafa and Raja Suefia Raja Arif, for the engaging interview.
