Electricity Tariff Increase of 14 Percent is Untrue – PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed claims that the basic electricity tariff in Peninsular Malaysia will rise by 14 percent in July. He clarified that while a tariff increase is anticipated in the second half of the year, the exact rate will be determined after a review.
Anwar explained that any adjustments will be based on current capacity and price conditions.
“Regarding the issue of the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT), the electricity tariff transfer is not 14 percent. It’s not true! The review every six months is based on prevailing prices.
Therefore, I do not think it will be overly burdensome or detrimental to the public. However, it certainly won’t be as stated. This is why I just checked with Zafrul (Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz) to confirm if I was mistaken,” he said.
Anwar made the remarks at a Chinese New Year celebration hosted by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) today.
Earlier, reports had circulated stating that the basic electricity tariff in Peninsular Malaysia would rise by 14.2 percent to 45.62 sen/kWh starting July 1, 2025, for the period between 2025 and 2027. This adjustment, from the current rate of 39.95 sen/kWh, was reportedly based on the framework for regulating the power sector in the future.
