Fastart: Elevating excellence in Malaysia’s oil and gas sector
KUCHING (Aug 30): In an exciting development for the local oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) sector, Fastart Sdn Bhd (Fastart) has been commemorated as one of the 47 Sarawakian vendors by the Sarawak Government and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) for its contributions towards the local OGSE industry during the recently-held Sarawak Commemoration Day.
To date, 72 Sarawak companies have been commemorated by Petronas, which aims to continue supporting the local service providers in Sarawak. Fastart, originally rooted in the timber industry, has successfully diversified into oil and gas in 2009 after a major change in its shareholders and management team.
Ten years on, the company has broaden its scope of services to include civil construction and maintenance.
“This strategic move has paid off, positioning Fastart as a crucial player in the energy industry.”
To date, Fastart has collaborated on several high-profile projects with Petronas and other oil majors and main contractors, particularly in providing blasting, painting, and coating related services.
These projects have not only elevated Fastart’s technical capabilities but also underscored its commitment to delivering top-tier services.
Commitment to Human Capital Development
From the beginning, Fastart has prioritised local employment. The company first started to venture into the oil and gas industry with only a handful of dedicated and discipline workforce. Today, that figure has risen to over 200.
This serves as a testament to Fastart’s commitment in developing its internal capabilities and empowering the local oil and gas services industry, while simultaneously supporting local communities and fostering socioeconomic development.
“This focus on local talent has bolstered the company’s reputation and contributed to regional growth,” said Tommy when interviewed. Through continuous training programmes, skills development workshops, and active participation in industry forums, Fastart ensures its team remains at the forefront of industry advancements.
When asked if the company has any development plans to attract more Sarawakians to join the industry, Tommy affirmed its vision for this.
“Fastart is a true blue Sarawakian company, based in Miri. We are continuously exploring opportunities to engage with high tech companies from outside of Sarawak to partner with us in the hope of expanding our scope of services, thereby creating more job opportunities for local Sarawakians.
“One example is our partnership with Honeywell whereby we managed to break into the niche market and secure the job with Petronas for the tank gauging system,” Tommy added.
Implementation of Sustainability Efforts
Aligned with the National Energy Policy 2022-2040, National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and Petronas’ Net Zero Carbon Emissions (NZCE) 2050 Pathway, Fastart affirms its commitment to sustainability.
The company has started implementing numerous initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote environmental stewardship, reflecting its dedication to sustainable practices. By the end of 2025, Fastart targets to achieve a 20 per cent emissions reduction by converting some of its current vehicles and machinery to electric vehicles (EVs), depending on market availability. As for its construction sites, the company aims for all its electricity needs at sites to be 100 per cent powered by solar panels by end of this year.
Looking ahead, Fastart aims to cement its position as a leader in the oil and gas industry, known for innovation, safety, and sustainability.
Realising Aspiration through Perseverance and Partnership
Fastart’s journey from timber to oil and gas and civil constructions highlights the importance of having strategic vision and unwavering commitment. This success story serves as an inspiration, showcasing the potential of strategic diversification and the significance of local talent development in achieving long-term industry success.
The company’s ongoing partnership with Petronas and other oil majors plays a pivotal role in achieving these goals and contributing positively to the nation’s energy landscape. As the company continues to grow and collaborate with industry giants, its impact on the local economy and the broader energy sector is set to increase.
