First Pos Shop in East Malaysia Opens in Kota Kinabalu
KOTA KINABALU, Feb 8 – Pos Malaysia’s launch of Pos Shops across the country underscores its commitment to evolving with the digital era while continuing to meet the needs of modern consumers, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.
While postal services remain essential for letter and document deliveries, Hajiji highlighted that the Pos Shop initiative aims to offer contemporary services tailored to current customer demands.
“The presence of Pos Shop will not only simplify daily transactions but also create new opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) nationwide,” he said.
As of December 2024, more than 80 local SMEs have benefited from Pos Shop branches, which stock products across three categories: Ready-to-Eat Food, Food and Beverages, and Non-Food Items.
“This initiative reflects Pos Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to supporting and advancing the SME sector. I hope that the launch of Sabah’s first Pos Shop in Kota Kinabalu will cater to local consumer needs while also providing a platform for SME entrepreneurs in Sabah to generate income,” Hajiji said during the launch ceremony at the main Post Office building in Kota Kinabalu.
Representing Hajiji at the event was Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.
Sabah, rich in natural resources and economic potential, is poised for rapid growth across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, and tourism, Hajiji noted. He added that the establishment of the Pos Shop in Kota Kinabalu aligns with the state’s broader economic development agenda by enhancing service delivery and business opportunities.
The Pos Shop concept is part of Pos Malaysia’s broader transformation strategy, leveraging its extensive network of over 600 post offices nationwide, including 40 in Sabah.
“From bill payments and insurance services to road tax renewals and parcel dispatch, Pos Malaysia has expanded its offerings. Now, in addition to its traditional services, customers can also purchase food, beverages, and other essentials, ensuring that the post office remains relevant in changing times,” Hajiji said.
He further elaborated on the innovative ‘shop-in-shop’ concept, which integrates traditional postal services with modern retail experiences, creating a one-stop centre for the local community.
“This model reimagines post offices as more than just mailing centres, transforming them into customer-friendly spaces where people can handle financial transactions, postal needs, and daily shopping in a convenient and comfortable environment,” he said.
The introduction of the Pos Shop initiative marks a significant milestone in Pos Malaysia’s evolution, reinforcing its role in both service delivery and economic empowerment.
