Four dead, 38 injured explosion in Istanbul
ISTANBUL: Four civilians were killed and 38 others were injured after an explosion rocked Istiklal Avenue in the center of Istanbul today.
A statement issued by the local governor and a video showing the critical situation caused civilians to run to save themselves from the explosion.
In the incident, the authorities surrounded the location and several ambulances rushed to the scene. According to TRT News , the location is located in Beyoglu in the city of Istanbul which is crowded with civilians.
“There has been loss of life and injuries,” Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said on Twitter, announcing the explosion at around 4.20pm local time.
However, Turkey’s state-owned Anadolu agency said the cause of the explosion was still unknown.
In the meantime, Reuters reporters witnessed a helicopter hovering in the air and several ambulances near Taksim Square.
The Kasimpasa police station said all its members were at the scene but did not release further details.
Local media said investigators were also at the scene.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Red Crescent said blood supplies were being taken to a nearby hospital.
The Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) regulator imposed a broadcast ban on coverage of the explosion about an hour after it happened.
