Gaza the ‘Most Dangerous Place in the World’ for Aid Workers, Says UK Foreign Secretary

LONDON, April 2 – UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has described Gaza as “the most dangerous place in the world” for humanitarian workers, amid the ongoing Israeli military campaign in the region, Anadolu Agency reported.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Lammy highlighted the growing risks faced by aid workers, noting that over 400 humanitarian personnel have been killed in Israeli attacks since the conflict escalated.

During his address in the House of Commons, Lammy said he had urged Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar last month to expedite the military investigation into the deadly strike on a World Central Kitchen convoy in April last year, which resulted in the deaths of several aid workers.

He stressed the need for accountability and justice for the victims. “We must see lasting improvements in the safety and security of aid workers on the ground – that would be a meaningful legacy for the British nationals who lost their lives,” Lammy said.

The April 1, 2024 drone strike killed seven World Central Kitchen staff members, including three British nationals, an Australian, a Pole, a dual US-Canadian citizen, and a Palestinian.

The attack drew widespread international condemnation and sparked calls for accountability, with World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés disputing Israel’s claim that the strike was a tragic case of “misidentification.”

Israeli forces have continued their aerial assault on Gaza since March 18, killing over 1,000 people and injuring more than 2,000 others. The renewed offensive has further strained a fragile ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement brokered in January between Israel and Hamas.

Since October 2023, more than 50,300 Palestinians – primarily women and children – have been killed in Israeli military operations in Gaza.
