Iswardy Morni been found guilty as showing disrespect to the King.

KUALA LUMPUR: Today, a court punished an activist for a Facebook post from three years ago that was considered rude to the King of Malaysia.

Judge M Edwin Paramjothy said that Iswardy Morni, who is 47 years old, is not guilty because the defense didn’t provide enough clear proof that he was guilty.

The court will hear from both sides on January 23 next year before deciding the punishment.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Iznina Hanim Hashim was at the trial, and lawyer Faizal Rahman was the lawyer for the person accused.

On October 4, the court ruled that Iswardy has to defend himself against the accusations because the prosecution showed strong early evidence.

During the trial that began on January 3, 2022, nine people talked for the prosecution, while Iswardy was the only one who talked for the defense.

Iswardy was charged with sharing a message on his Facebook page, Iswardy Morni Official, that was seen as criticizing the government and could also damage the reputation of the King. He was taken to the CID Office at Bukit Aman on the evening of May 29, 2021.

Someone has been charged with violating the Sedition Act of 1948. If he is found guilty, he might have to pay a fine of up to RM5,000, go to jail for three years, or face both penalties.
