Laos Records $310 Million Trade Surplus in February Amid Export Surge

VIENTIANE, March 31 – Laos posted a significant trade surplus of 310 million USD in February, driven by a sharp rise in exports and a decline in imports, according to a report published by the Lao Trade Portal on Monday.

The country’s total trade volume exceeded 1.5 billion USD, with exports reaching 925 million USD, marking a 42.3% increase compared to January. Imports, meanwhile, dropped by 12.9% to 615 million USD.

Key export items included electrical appliances and equipment, mixed and bar gold, cassava, potassium salt, copper ore, paper products, wood pulp, rubber, cassava starch, and clothing.

On the import side, Laos mainly brought in diesel fuel, land vehicles, chemical products, mechanical equipment, sugar, iron and steel goods, electrical and electronic components, fertilizer, farm tractors, and apparel.

Thailand, Vietnam, and China remained the top destinations for Lao exports, while the same three countries were also the main sources of imports.

The positive trade balance reflects Laos’ growing export capacity and shifting trade dynamics in the region.
