KUALA LUMPUR: In a press conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, President of the Malaysian Olympic Council (MOM), exuded optimism about Malaysia’s prospects for securing its inaugural Olympic gold medal at the upcoming 2024 Paris Games. Citing the ambitious declarations made by several athletes regarding their gold medal aspirations, Norza urged the nation to place its trust in their capabilities.
Among those aiming for the top spot are national track cycling champion Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, distinguished for his podium finishes in previous Olympics, and badminton talents Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Lee Zii Jia, former All-England champion. Norza affirmed his unwavering support for these athletes and emphasized the momentum building within the Malaysian contingent.
“We have witnessed our athletes boldly proclaiming their intentions, demonstrating a commendable competitive spirit. As administrators, it is imperative that we stand behind them wholeheartedly,” Norza stated during the press conference held in conjunction with the signing of a partnership agreement with the National Heart Institute (IJN).
With Malaysia’s quest for Olympic gold spanning nearly seven decades since its debut in 1956, Norza acknowledged the significance of this pursuit and highlighted the nation’s readiness, with 18 athletes from seven sports already qualified for the Paris Games.
Moreover, Norza revealed details of a comprehensive partnership with IJN, valued at RM149,900 annually, aimed at providing medical support to national and junior players under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). This collaboration encompasses medical screenings and protection for athletes, with IJN designated as the medical partner for prestigious tournaments such as the Malaysia Open, Malaysia Masters, and Malaysia Super 100.
The agreement, sealed by Norza on behalf of BAM and Datuk Dr. Aizai Azan Abdul Rahim, CEO of IJN, signifies a significant step towards ensuring the well-being of Malaysian athletes as they strive for excellence on the international stage.
