Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 2,800
YANGON, April 2 – The death toll from the powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar last Friday has risen to 2,886, with at least 4,639 people injured and 373 still missing, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Information Team of the State Administration Council, Xinhua reported.
Myo Nyunt, President of the Myanmar Red Cross Society, told Xinhua that rescue efforts are being severely hampered by logistical challenges and safety concerns in affected areas.
“Assessing the scale of the disaster and coordinating logistics remain major hurdles,” Myo Nyunt said, adding that a lack of heavy machinery is further slowing down aid distribution and search-and-rescue operations.
Rescue teams are facing significant obstacles in reaching communities due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing security issues, compounding the already dire humanitarian situation in the aftermath of the quake.
