Nenggiri Hydroelectric Dam can reduce flood risk in Kelantan by 40 percent.
GUA MUSANG: The construction of the Nenggiri hydroelectric dam in Kampung Star here can help reduce around 40% of flood problems in Kelantan.
Gua Musang Disaster Operation Control Centre (PKOB) chairman Nik Raisnan Daud said the RM5 billion project also functions as a water storage area to accommodate rain that can cause river water to rise.
This project will build a large lake measuring 53.84 square kilometres and a pond to control water flow measuring 0. This project can also help stop floods by preventing large amounts of water from entering the river.
“This project is still under construction and when completed, it is hoped that it can reduce flood problems in the downstream areas of Kelantan, especially in Kota Bharu, by 40 percent,” he told reporters after inspecting the progress of the project here yesterday.
He said the 5,400-hectare dam can control the flow of the Nenggiri River, especially during the rainy season.
Water in Gua Musang comes from Sungai Lebir and Sungai Nenggiri. With this dam, we can control the amount of water flowing down.
“Even though it is the rainy season, construction work is still continuing because we hope it will be completed in November 2027 as planned,” he said.
The Nenggiri hydroelectric construction project was started by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in March 2022. This project is expected to produce 300 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.
