At a press conference led by Minister for Economic Growth Nicola Willis, Minister of Immigration Erica Stanford, and Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston, the government outlined its plans to capitalize on global talent and boost the nation’s tourism and trade sectors.
Addressing Economic Challenges
Minister Willis acknowledged the economic hurdles New Zealand has faced, including inflation spikes, high interest rates, and a cost-of-living crisis, which have stifled economic activity and employment. However, she struck an optimistic note, pointing to decreasing interest rates, rising business confidence, and promising growth forecasts for 2025.
“Growth means more jobs, higher incomes, and the wealth necessary to invest in critical sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure,” she stated. Central to the government’s plan is fostering trade and investment while making New Zealand a magnet for international talent.

Minister Stanford emphasized the simplicity of the program: “This isn’t a new visa but an enhancement of our existing visitor visa. It’s straightforward, cost-effective, and aimed at attracting high-value tourists who can work remotely while enjoying all New Zealand has to offer.”

Tourism, New Zealand’s second-largest export, remains a cornerstone of the nation’s economic recovery. While tourist numbers have rebounded from COVID-era lows, they remain below pre-pandemic levels. “Our goal is to turn short visits into longer stays, encouraging more nights in local accommodations, more meals in our restaurants, and more exploration of our beautiful landscapes,” said Louise Upston.
The government plans to launch an advertising campaign with an initial budget of $100,000, targeting key markets to promote the visa. Officials are confident the program will generate significant returns, bolstering local businesses and increasing GST revenue.
