Pakistan visit highlights UTS’ networking efforts with OIC-linked varsities

SIBU (Jan 28): Representatives of the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) travelled to Pakistan to attend the Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) meeting recently.

Held in Islamabad, the meeting also saw the signing of three memoranda of understanding (MoUs).

UTS in a press statement yesterday said it had entered into the agreement with a private institution, Superior University, and a public university, Information Technology University (ITU)—both based in Lahore.

“The MoUs were signed by UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Khairuddin Ab Hamid with Superior University’s Registrar Mudasser Kamran, and Prof Dr Adnan Noor Mian from the ITU,” it said.

Also present at the ceremony was Dr Tariq Zaman, an associate professor at UTS’ School of Computing and Creative Media.

The highlight of Khairuddin’s visit to Pakistan was his participation in the COMSTECH meeting in Islamabad.

“As the ministerial standing committee on scientific and technological cooperation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), COMSTECH serves as an important platform for collaboration among member states.

“With UTS now joining as a new member, the university aims to foster synergies across OIC nations by promoting cross-border mobility of students and faculty.

“This initiative reflects UTS’s steadfast commitment to advancing global academic partnerships and driving innovation through international scientific cooperation,” said UTS.

The participating OIC universities are those from Uganda, Somalia, Iran, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Palestine, Jordan, Oman, Indonesia, Russia, Mauritania, Malaysia and also the host Pakistan, with special guest scientists from China.

Khairuddin also visited one of the top private universities, University of Faisalabad, which was established in 1947 under the family foundation called the Madina Foundation.

“In Faisalabad, the COMSTECH member universities signed MoU with the Government College University Faisalabad, the top university in Punjab.”

COMSTECH is the ministerial standing committee on science and technology under the OIC, representing a collaborative network of 57 member countries.
