Petronas to ensure sufficient gas supply for Sarawak

KUCHING (Feb 25): Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) will continue to ensure a sufficient natural gas supply for Sarawak to meet its target of 1.2 billion standard cubic feet per day (BSCFD) by 2030 to meet domestic needs.

Petronas’ head of integrated hydrocarbon management, Malaysia Petroleum Management, Anuar Ismail said this demand has been incorporated into the company’s base planning, with identified fields set to supply Sarawak’s requirements.

“We have put those demand (1.2 billion bscfd of natural gas by 2030) into the base demand for Sarawak and identified fields that will supply this particular demand centres.

“For Petronas, we value the close collaboration between us and the state of Sabah and Sarawak, given that 60 to 70 percent of oil the gas in Malaysia are from these two states.

“And we also understand the aspiration that the state governments will be moving the industry in Sabah and Sarawak through the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Sarawak Gas Roadmap respectively,” he said.

He said this during a panel session at the CONNECT Energy Borneo 2025 conference, hosted by the Energy Industries Council (EIC) at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre on Tuesday.

Under the Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016 (Amendment) (DGO), Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) is guaranteed up to 1.2 billion SCFD of natural gas for domestic use, with additional supply contingent on future needs.

Anuar noted that Petronas currently supplies approximately 500 million SCFD to non-energy consumers in Sarawak.

“For Sarawak, we a few key demand centres. In Miri, we supply around 70 million SCFD to support the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) plant in the northern region.

“For Samalaju, we understand the state’s aspiration to expand industrial areas, and we have always factored that into our base demand planning.

“We continue to supply Bintulu as a major gas hub. Next one, which we are working with the state government, is for us to keep supplying them with enough gas for them to also open up a Kuching hub in this southern region of Sarawak,” he added.

He reiterated that these demands have been carefully planned, with designated fields set to ensure a steady supply.

Anuar also highlighted Sabah’s rising gas demand, which has grown alongside industrial development.

He explained that Sabah’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure includes (floating LNG) FLNG-1, which produces 190 million SCFD, FLNG-2 producing 270 million SCFD, and a new facility in Sipitang, called Z-LNG or FLNG-3, with a capacity of 320 million SCFD.

“Therefore, we are all set to support these two states, and we are committed to that,” he said.
