Public Works Ministry Proposes Unified SOP to Expedite Road Repairs
KLUANG, March 24, 2025 – The Ministry of Works (KKR) is calling for a standardized Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to accelerate repair works on state and municipal roads, particularly in cases of serious damage.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said that, at present, only federal roads are prioritized for repairs within a 24-hour window, especially when potholes or damage occur in central or side sections of the road.
“State and municipal roads deserve the same level of attention. Concessionaires must ensure the quality of repairs includes the road shoulders, not just the center lanes,” he told reporters after visiting flood victims at the temporary relief center in SMK Seri Perdana.
The proposal comes in the wake of a recent tragedy in Kota Tinggi, where two students lost their lives due to pothole-related road conditions. A full investigation into the incident is expected to conclude soon.
Ahmad also stressed the need for consistent road monitoring, particularly during the rainy season, when roads are more prone to rapid deterioration.
On the issue of floods affecting Johor, the deputy minister urged for additional funding to be allocated to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to facilitate more frequent maintenance of rivers and drainage systems. He also called for the flood mitigation projects announced by the Prime Minister to be expedited.
Mahkota state assemblyman Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah echoed the deputy minister’s sentiments, noting that over 600 residents in his constituency were affected by the recent severe floods.
