Quintana Roo Showcases Tourism Excellence at Monumental Advisory Council Session

In a significant moment for Quintana Roo’s tourism industry, the 2nd Extraordinary Session of the State’s Tourism Advisory Council took place yesterday at the Krystal Cancún Hotel. During the event, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa unveiled the State Tourism Award, honoring trailblazers who have shaped the region’s tourism landscape.

This inaugural recognition paid a heartfelt posthumous tribute to Eng. Romárico Arroyo Marroquín, a pioneer whose visionary leadership revolutionized the Mexican Caribbean. Eng. Arroyo Marroquín, a prominent entrepreneur and federal-level public servant, played an instrumental role in transforming Cancún into a global tourism hotspot and cementing the sector as a cornerstone of Mexico’s economy.

His enduring legacy includes his influential work at Fonatur, where he spearheaded the design of Integrated Planning Centers (CIPs) for destinations such as Cancún, Ixtapa, Loreto, and Los Cabos. Additionally, his innovative financing models enabled the development of numerous projects that solidified tourism as a driving force for Mexico’s progress.

Accepting the award on behalf of the late pioneer were his children, Daniel and Viviana Arroyo. The ceremony also celebrated the accomplishments of Diego de la Peña, a distinguished tourism entrepreneur recognized for his remarkable efforts in promoting the region.

The event drew a diverse audience, including Cancún Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, State Secretary of Tourism Bernardo Cueto Riestra, business leaders, municipal tourism officials, deputies, and other state representatives. Friends and family of the honorees were also present, creating an atmosphere of pride and admiration.

The Tourism Advisory Council, which unites key stakeholders from the industry, reiterated its dedication to advancing tourism in Quintana Roo. The council highlighted the enduring contributions of figures like Eng. Romárico Arroyo Marroquín and Diego de la Peña, whose work continues to inspire the region’s growth and establish Quintana Roo as a premier destination in Mexico and beyond.
