Rosmah Hails High Court’s Acquittal as ‘Justice Served’ in Money Laundering and Tax Evasion Case
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 — Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor welcomed the High Court’s decision today to acquit her of money laundering and tax evasion charges, describing the ruling as a triumph of justice.
Rosmah’s discharge and acquittal came after the court allowed her application to quash all charges on grounds that they were defective, lacked essential elements, and deprived her of a fair trial.
“From day one, my lawyers informed me there was no basis for these charges,” Rosmah told reporters at a press conference.
“This is what I call justice, and it is the kind of justice that everyone should have. Justice should never be played with — not just for us, but for the public as well. Let me rest now, breathe a bit. Alhamdulillah,” she added.
Her legal team, visibly elated, said the ruling marked the culmination of a prolonged pursuit of fairness.
“To put it simply, we are absolutely thrilled, delighted, and thankful for today’s decision. Justice has finally been served,” they said.
High Court judge K Muniandy ruled that the charges against the 73-year-old were illegal and flawed, failing to comply with provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code.
“The charges amounted to duplicity and multiplicity. Furthermore, they did not disclose any offence,” Muniandy stated.
Rosmah had filed her application to strike out the charges in September 2023, and the hearing commenced on Dec 12 this year, following partial proceedings where two witnesses testified.
This marks Rosmah’s second corruption case. In a separate trial, on Sept 1, 2022, she was convicted on three corruption charges involving the RM1.25 billion hybrid solar project for 369 rural schools in Sarawak.
Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan, then serving at the High Court, sentenced her to 10 years in prison for each charge, to be served concurrently, and imposed a fine of RM970 million. A failure to pay the fine would result in an additional 30 years in jail.
However, Rosmah’s sentence in the solar project case is on hold pending an appeal at the Court of Appeal.
